Our Mission
Founded in 1992, the Center for the Study of the American South
is about digging deep into the complexities of the South—its past,
its present, and its future.
We’re a home where research, creativity, and community collide to spark conversations that matter. We’re committed to being honest about the region’s history while staying engaged with how it’s changing and growing today.
Through public programs, publications, fellowships, and creative partnerships, we connect the campus and the community, giving people the tools and space to explore the South’s diverse cultures and stories. Our work is driven by a passion for innovation, collaboration, and critical thinking, as we push for a more inclusive and forward-thinking South.
History
The Center for the Study of the American South was
founded in 1992 at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
history and culture to its economy, politics, and arts. It’s a space
for exploring how all these aspects come together and shape the
region today. Nestled within UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences, the
Center calls the historic Love House its home.
